About Me - Jane Thoy

Picture

After an early career in the financial and personnel sector, I changed direction and completed a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology followed by several years working with families and children experiencing a wide range of traumas, stresses and relationship problems. During this time I also developed a passion for supporting people who had experienced, or were living with, relationship abuse (a.k.a. domestic violence and abuse/dv&a).

Including a period working with victims of crime, over the past 12 years I have specialised in relationship abuse/dv&a recovery; my roles have included Counsellor, Community Supporter, Trainer, Team Supervisor and New Project & Service Development.

I have worked in a diverse range of settings including the voluntary and statutory sectors and delivered training programmes in these sectors as well as private, commercial and education settings.

How I Work

My counselling training was based on a relational model which means our working relationship will provide the foundation to explore your concerns, worries, problems and experiences.  You may be feeling the impact of your difficulties in your personal, social and/or professional life.  For many of us, our coping strategies, thought patterns and the 'internal language' we use to guide us as adults are defined in early life experience - but these may be negative or simply no longer relevant; sometimes they can self-sabotage or make us vulnerable.  I will offer you a safe, supportive, non-judgmental space in which to facilitate understanding of your experiences, feelings and thoughts. Together we will find ways to achieve, or at least work towards, your goals for counselling.

A recent comment included:  "You have a special ability to recognise the depth of problems and issues.  You're warm, non-judgmental and you focus on understanding and change.  Your skill was in listening but also much more, you helped me to understand and find strategies to help improve my thinking and feelings.  The therapy extended beyond the session as your voice has the ability to stay with me."

Where and When I Work

Working from personal premises in Ilkley, I can offer counselling appointments Tuesday - Friday including some evening appointments.  My premises are easily accessed by car (with parking readily available) and bus services.  The main Ilkley bus and train stations are a 10-minute walk.
