A Counselling colleague had recently been approached for support by someone who had grown up with domestic violence and abuse in her home. As an adult, Chloe (not her real name) continued to find herself both impacted by this experience but also drawn into her parent's on-going subsequent abusive relationships. Chloe badly needed to 'understand' it and to validate her own experience: She also wanted to make an informed decision about how she moved forward.
Chloe only wanted to attend about 3 sessions but after the first, agreed she would need more time. We stuck with 3 but extended the last two sessions to 2 hours each and Chloe was able to achieve her goals for counselling and took the time to tell the referring Counsellor how it had gone. I think we all like to know when we have helped someone so this feedback, sent to the referrer (and with consent for it to be shared given to me) , was greatly appreciated. "Hi xxxx, Thank you so much for your recommendation regarding Jane Thoy. I've just finished working with Jane, and our sessions have been very helpful. She has an exceptionally strong grasp of the family dynamics around Domestic Violence, and her experience and expertise in this area and skillful support has been exactly what I needed to help me get to a better place." (Dec 2019) A later up-date from the client confirmed she had taken the actions she planned, albeit with some initial hesitation, but her courage in speaking out had given her wider-family support. This was a positive reminder for what can be achieved, even in a brief therapeutic relationship. |
